Botox treatment

Botox® (aka anti-wrinkle injections) are one of the most popular treatments we provide at our Sheffield-based cosmetic clinic and a procedure which we're most often asked about. This post explains some of our most frequently asked questions in a little more detail and explores how long Botox® results typically last.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a cosmetic treatment that uses small doses of a prescribed medication called Botulinum Toxin to temporarily paralyse targeted facial muscles. In turn, this can give your skin a smoother, fresher appearance.

Botox® is the brand name for one of the Botulinum Toxins available, although there are other commonly used products available, such as Azzalure, Boccouture and Nucevia.

At Eterno Aesthetics, we typically use Botox®. However, on occasion, we may choose to try a different / better-suited toxin to enhance or lengthen results.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

Botox® is licensed to last up to 12 weeks. However, this does not mean that muscle deactivation will remain right up to the 12-week point.

Once Botox® is injected, you will typically start to see a reduction in movement after 3 - 5 days, with the full effects visible from around 2 weeks. At this point, we will bring you back into clinic for a review and to adjust as required.

If lines are deeper to start with, we call these ‘static lines’ and they will not disappear immediately - or perhaps not at all! However, over time and with repeated treatments, wrinkles will soften during the periods when your muscles are at rest and Botox® can prevent further deepening.

For best results, it is advisable to begin Botox® treatment before you notice static lines, as it can prevent you from developing wrinkles in the first place.

When Will Movement Restart?

Movement typically starts to reappear after about 6 weeks, when you are halfway through your treatment cycle. You will regain more movement as each week goes by, until week 12, when you can revisit for your next Botox® treatment.

Over time and as static lines soften, you will feel like the toxin lasts longer, as your skin will remain smooth and you will be able to wait for longer between treatments.

Can I Improve My Results?

There are a number of factors that can affect how long Botox® lasts and results vary from person to person.

For example, in the first 48 hours after treatment, it is extremely important that you do not get too hot. This is because things like strenuous exercises, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths can stop Botox® working as intended and results may subsequently wear off faster.

Lifestyle choices such as sunbed use, smoking and excessive alcohol can also shorten the effects of Botox® and daily medical skincare maintenance is essential from a maintenance perspective.
