There’s something about the back-to-school energy of September that gets us thinking about renewal. As the autumn months arrive, we want to feel fresh, which goes for our skin, as well. Meaning it’s an ideal time to book in with your skin therapist for a seasonal skincare review.

Known as “peel season”, autumn is the perfect time to rejuvenate your skin with a chemical peel. But why?

No.1 is sun damage. Traditionally, autumn is a cooler season, with the sun’s rays becoming less intense after the heat of summer. Following a chemical peel, the skin becomes more sensitive to UV light for a short time, so it makes sense to schedule your peel during chillier months.

Once the cooler weather arrives, it’s not long until winter – dare we mention it?! Winter skin suffers from the combo of hot central heating and frosty air, which can lead to uncomfortable dryness, breakouts, irritation, and sensitivity.

We recommend working to get your skin in tip top condition before facing more challenging conditions, as healthier skin will cope better with these issues and potentially avoid them altogether.

A chemical peel can also improve drier skin, by removing the dead skin cells that are just sitting around, causing the complexion to look dull. Once they’re gone, not only will you regain your glow, but active ingredients and hydrators are more readily absorbed, so you get all the best benefits from your skincare.

Now, prepare yourself for the first mention of the festive period! Yep, it’s mere months away. However, if you opt for a chemical peel in advance, your skin will be glowing by the time those invites start rolling in. Think of autumn as the season of pumpkin spice, and chemical peels.

What Do Chemical Peels Do?

Chemical peels are recommended to treat wrinkles, discoloured skin and scarring, typically across the face and neck.

They can be implemented alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures such as microneedling and can be done at different depths, from light to intense.

Deep chemical peels offer more dramatic results, but they also take longer to recover from.

Medium-strength peels target the outer and middle layers of skin to remove damaged, worn-out cells. This treatment is used to improve the appearance of age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, and moderate skin discolouration.

Superficial peels such as the ZO Stimulator Peel are perfect for those who want exfoliation on the outer layer of skin only. Although it’s a milder peel, this treatment is used to improve discolouration and an uneven skin texture.

We use a range of chemical peels here at Eterno Aesthetics and can recommend the perfect peel for your complexion.

Chemical Peel For Acne

Chemical peels break down corneosomes with subsequent exfoliation, induce keratolysis, and also have comedolytic effects. They decrease sebum production and pore size and have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

Chemical Peel For Acne Scars

Chemical peels improve the appearance of acne scars by using a chemical solution to remove the outer layer of old skin. The new skin that replaces it is usually smoother and less scarred in appearance. A medium depth peel may generate quicker results and would typically be recommended for acne scarring.

Chemical Peel For Wrinkles

Chemical peels improve the appearance of wrinkled skin by using a biological peel solution to remove the outer layer of old skin. The new skin that replaces it is usually smoother and less creased in appearance.

Chemical Peel For Melasma & Age Spots (Dark Spots)

Melasma is a common condition of hyperpigmentation. The basic mechanism of the action of chemical peeling in targeting melasma is the removal of unwanted melanin by causing a controlled chemical reaction.

Chemical Peel For Hyperpigmentation

Chemical peels can lighten and even out the skin tone. Superficial peels are suitable for ethnic skin. However, pigment changes can be caused by a chemical peel in people prone to this complication due to their skin type.

When Is The Best Time For A Chemical Peel?

Although you can choose to get a chemical peel any time of the year, the best times is between September and April.

How Often Should I Book In A Chemical Peel?

We recommend 1-2 maintenance peels per year if you do not have any specific skin concerns.

Are Chemical Peels Safe?

Chemical peels are deemed to be safe when they’re performed by a trained medical practitioner who thoroughly assess your skin to determine the strength and type of peel appropriate.

Complications or side effects include temporary or permanent changes in skin colour, scarring and reactivation of cold sores, but these are rare when a peel is performed at a medical clinic.

Is Sun Exposure Permitted Post Peel?

Sun exposure should be limited before and avoided immediately after the peel process. When you expose your skin to the sun’s ultraviolet rays before and soon after a chemical peel, you increase the risk of side effects, especially post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (paradoxical darkening).
